Born 13th December 1981, Riverside, California, U.S. Bands: Evanescence Early Life Amy Lee was born to parents John Lee, a disc jockey and TV personality, and Sara Cargill in 1981. She has one brother, Robby, and two sisters, Carrie and Laurie. Lee had a third sister, who died in 1987 at the age of three from an unidentified illness. Following brief periods living in California, Florida and Illinois, the family settled in Little Rock, Arkansas. Amy showed a interest and talent for music from a young age. In junior high, she joined the choir and attended all-state competitions and in high school, she was the president of her choir council and was involved in the all-region choir and spring musical. After 9 years of piano lessons, she graduated from Little Rock’s Pulaski Academy in 2000 and also briefly attended Middle Tennessee State University.
Musical Career At the age of 14, at a Little Rock youth club, Lee met guitarist and songwriter Ben Moody. Within a month, the pair were playing acoustic sets at Arkansas book stores and coffee houses. The pair found their songs being played on local radio stations, raising awareness of the group and demand for a concert. Lee and Boyd eventually appeared live playing with friends, and became a popular act in the Arkansas area. Together they recorded two EPs, Evanescence EP (1998) and Sound Asleep EP (1999), selling them at various local venues and concerts. Their first full-length demo CD, Origin (released in 2000), is relatively unknown but contained a number of songs that would later appear on their debut full length album. In 2002 the band were signed to New York based label Wind-up Records and started work on their debut album, Fallen which was released in March 2003. Fallen spent 58 weeks on the Billboard Top 20, and 100 weeks on the Billboard Top 200. In the UK, the album spent 33 weeks on the Top 20, and 60 weeks on the Top 75 and reached #1. The album went on to sell over fifteen million copies worldwide. The album also produced Evanescence's most successful single to date, "Bring Me to Life".The song topped charts worldwide, including the UK Singles Chart, the Australian ARIA Singles Chart, and the United World Chart, reached #3 in New Zealand, and reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. On the back of this huge commercial success the band embarked on a world tour and released a live album and DVD, Anywhere but Home, in 2004. Moody left the band during the European tour for Fallen, reportedly because of creative differences. However Lee decided to continue with a new line up and began work on a second studio album, The Open Door, at the end of 2005. The 13-track album was released in Canada and the United States in October 2006. To date, it has spawned five singles and been supported by two worldwide tours. The album was certified platinum in the United States just over a month after its release, and has since sold more than 4.7 millions copies worldwide. During an October 2008 interview for Spin.com, Lee noted that she was writing new songs, possibly for a solo album project. Citing influences in folk and Celtic music, stating her current writings feel like she is going back to her "really old" roots ( her parents are of Scottish and English decent).
